4K and HDR Setup Guide: Get the Picture You Paid For

Most 4K HDR TVs in the world are showing 1080p SDR content. The panel is ready; the chain is not. Fix the chain once and every stream improves.
The Chain
Source → cable → port → TV setting → content. A failure anywhere drops everything downstream.
Checklist
- HDMI cable: must be "High Speed" or "Ultra High Speed" — old cables from 2015 cannot carry 4K HDR.
- Correct port: some TVs limit HDR to specific HDMI ports (often labelled "HDMI 2.1" or "ARC").
- HDMI mode: in TV input settings, set the port to "Enhanced format" / "Full bandwidth" — the default is often "Standard".
- Picture mode: select a mode with HDR in the name when HDR content plays; "Game/PC" modes often bypass processing.
- Streamer settings: the streaming device itself needs 4K output enabled (auto is often off).
Verify With Known Content
Play any 4K/HDR title and check your device's display info screen — it reports the active signal. If it says 1080p, work the chain again.
Then Fix the Source Quality
Hardware ready → pin the player to its highest quality. Browse HDR-friendly titles in the movies catalogue and confirm the picture mode switches when they start.
