How to Find the Best Movies of the Year Without Drowning in Lists

Every December, a thousand critics publish year-end lists, and the result is usually paralysis. The fix is a funnel.
Step 1: Merge, Do Not Read
Copy just the TITLES from five major lists into one sheet. No reviews yet — titles only. Overlaps reveal consensus faster than any summary.
Step 2: Count Appearances
Films appearing on 3+ lists are your must-sees. Two-list entries are mood picks. One-list entries are usually niche — cut unless a specific name intrigues you.
Step 3: Apply Your Three Filters
- Runtime — cut anything over your practical limit for the season.
- Availability — if it is not streamable anywhere you have access, defer it.
- Mood fit — year-end is heavy by default; keep at least three lighter titles in the ten.
Step 4: The Shortlist of Ten
Three heavy, four mid-weight, three fun. That mix survives actual evenings better than the critical consensus does.
Where to Watch the Shortlist
Check each title's availability, then park the reachable ones in your collection. Work through them one per weekend — ten films is a season, not a chore.
