How to Build a Home Cinema on a Budget (Under $300)

Home cinema upgrades follow diminishing returns — but three purchases sit on the steep part of the curve, and none requires a specialist.
Ranked by Impact per Dollar
- Light control ($0–30): blackout curtains or even dark towels over windows. Reflections destroy contrast more than any panel spec. Free wins beat paid ones.
- Audio ($50–150): a soundbar with a subwoofer, or wired headphones with a long cable. TV speakers are the single biggest bottleneck in most living rooms.
- Seating distance ($0): move the couch. For a 55" 4K TV, sit ~2.8m away — closer and you see pixels, farther and you lose detail.
What NOT to Buy First
- A bigger TV before fixing light and audio — the same flaws scale up.
- Premium HDMI cables from airport kiosks — any certified high-speed cable works identically.
- Speaker systems for rooms with hard floors and no rugs (echo eats dialogue).
Settings to Change Tonight
Turn off motion smoothing ("soap opera effect"), set picture mode to Cinema/Filmmaker, and pin streaming quality to maximum. These cost nothing.
Then Pick the Film
Grab something visually rich from the movies catalogue — the first film after setup feels like a different room entirely.
